This is my 1st season. How do I generate traffic in time for the first game?

Just like you would any other site ...  Promote it!

One year we went to a local pizza place and had them attach cards to every pie they sold.   Below is the card that we used and then we created simple page of explanations for contest.   If you won for the week, you got a free pie.   It was good for the pizza guy because he was getting traffic to his site beyond the normal flow, it was good for the customers because the idea of getting a free pie -- was pretty ok.   

Also, keep in mind that like any other site, it takes time to build traffic.   Our first year, we had maybe 30 players.  Last year was in the thousands.     It's very possible this year will be your building/learning year.  Nothing wrong with that.   Football will be back next year.
